Banking business in Ghana hit the 100th milestone a few years ago, the first bank - the Bank of West Africa - having been established in 1894. Ever since, the industry has grown in size and structure to become in rennet times one of the most advanced in the West African sub-region.
The Central Bank of the country, the Bank of Ghana was established in March 1957 under the Bank of Ghana Ordinance of 1957.
